I can’t live without chocolate so having learned to make my own raw treats has been a breakthrough for me last month! And so much better on my pocket 🙂
Do you know that feeling when you are at work and it approaches about 4pm, and you need a little treat to pick you up? I definitely do and my go-to treat has recently been a Nakd raw bar. They are yummy, however I want to know exactly what’s in my food if I eat it regularly and ‘natural flavouring’ always worries me, as I don’t know what companies mean by that! Why can’t they just say exactly which flavouring they used?
One of my first attempts at making raw treats were delicious Chocolate Orange Cookies from nutriliciousliving blog. They came out so yummy and full of natural flavour! Since then, I became addicted to testing my own recipes and replacing store bought treats with homemade.
I decided to create energy bites, with raw cocoa (my favourite), maca and chia seeds to provide me with energy wand little sweetness, to satisfy me taste buds. Normally, having some chocolate or other sweet would put me to sleep but this has the opposite effect! How awesome is that!
- ½ cup* of dates (pitted)
- ½ cup* of raw almonds or walnuts
- 2 tbs almond or cashew butter
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
- 2 – 3 tbs raw cocoa powder plus some more for coating
- 1 – 2 tbs chia seeds
- 1 tsp of maca powder (optional, it is my favourite superfood to add to raw cocoa)
* I use one of my tea mugs to measure everything, in this way I keep the right proportions.
Soak the almonds and dates for a few hours in cool water and then drain the water. Add the mix to the blender and mix together for about 5-10 seconds to create a crunchy consistency. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend for the next 30 seconds, or until you achieve the desired paste to be able to roll it into balls. I enjoy it crunchy and so I make sure the almonds are not too finely blended.
To form the balls, start rolling the paste between your hands and the size of them depends on how you like them! I normally make about 12 bites, as I like them slightly smaller. Finally, dust them with raw cocoa powder to create deliciously looking chocolate treats. Enjoy!
